STAYING FIT: SOME TIPS FOR EATING OUT
Plan Ahead
The way to choose a restaurant is on the basis of how easy it will be to eat there the way you want to eat. Keep a mental (or even written) list of restaurants you've gone to (or which you'd like to try) whose menus include foods you know are good for you: This might include your local steak house (almost all offer fish or chicken and a baked potato without butter or sour cream), or restaurants whose fish or meat portions aren't so huge that you'd be tempted to eat more than the optimal 3 1/2 ounces. (Remember, of course, that you can always halve your portion discreetly and take the rest home for tomorrow night's dinner.) Just keep your favorite healthy restaurants in mind so when your friends suggest going out to dinner you'll be ready with a few good ideas about where to go.
Another way to plan ahead is to be prepared for a spontaneous stop at a diner or restaurant by keeping a few packets of oil-free salad dressing, seasonings, or herb tea bags on hand in your briefcase, glove compartment, or purse.
Be Adventurous - Choose New Foods from the Menu!
You don't have to resign yourself to the "same old" boiled or baked potatoes, broiled fish and chicken, and steamed vegetables. Look for unusual dishes - perhaps vegetables and fruits you've never tried before, but that you know fall within healthy guidelines. Try new kinds of squash, order an artichoke, or try an "exotic" fish like mahimahi or poached chicken with an unusual fruit sauce. Open your mind to new taste sensations! We do tend to limit ourselves (and then feel "deprived") unnecessarily, forgetting that there really are a lot of things to choose from. Just look at the menu creatively, and try something new!
